Iraan-Sheffield ISD Announcement 1/21/26

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Iraan-Sheffield Independent School District is notifying families that a confirmed case of shingles (herpes zoster) has been reported within the district. At this time, there is no indication of widespread risk; however, we are providing this notice out of an abundance of caution and in the interest of transparency.

Shingles is caused by the same virus that causes chickenpox (varicella). Individuals who have previously had chickenpox may develop shingles later in life. While shingles itself is not spread person-to-person, the virus can be transmitted to individuals who have not had chickenpox or have not been vaccinated, potentially causing chickenpox in those individuals.

We ask parents and guardians to monitor their child for the following common symptoms of shingles:

  • Pain, burning, tingling, or sensitivity on one side of the body
  • Red rash that typically appears on one side of the body or face
  • Fluid-filled blisters that may crust over
  • Itching
  • Fever or chills
  • Headache
  • Fatigue or general malaise

If your child develops any of these symptoms, please consult a healthcare provider promptly and keep your child home until medical guidance is provided. Students diagnosed with shingles should not return to school until all blisters have dried and crusted over (generally 7-10 days), in accordance with public health recommendations.

The district continues to follow standard cleaning and health protocols. We encourage frequent handwashing, avoiding direct contact with rashes or blisters, and staying home when ill.

If you have questions or concerns, please contact your campus administration or school nurse. Thank you for your continued partnership in keeping our students and staff healthy.

Sincerely,

Iraan-Sheffield Independent School District
